Five or six years ago, my family went up to Lake Tahoe to celebrate my grandparents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary. We sat around the table at a restaurant and they shared their advice to us younger couples. Today, on my wife’s and my eighth anniversary, I reflect on their words. My grandma said, “If you can make it seven years, you can make it a lifetime. Those first seven are the hardest, but it gets easier after that.” Well, we made it, grandma. My grandpa was always quick with his wit and tongue, but he choked up when it came to his turn to speak. “I can’t even remember what it was like to live without Francis. Marrying her was the best damn thing I ever did.” Grandpa, I agree. Happy anniversary, Wifey. You still look like gold to me.
